Is the green and red contraption a washing machine?

laundry related... it is a mangle; run wet clothes through to wring out as much water as possible and to start the flattening process for easier ironing! The size and decor of this one suggest it came from a laird's house or one of Scotland's many castles. My granny had a more domestic-sized one which was used almost daily and I can recall getting plenty warnings about keeping wee fingers awa'!!! Yxx

  2. We actually ironed on the mangle. Knee operated controls, a hot bed and the pressure roller, raised and lowered by the knee operated controls. The clothes went through the wringer to dispense with water, but we had to protect the buttons.

  3. That washer is pretty cool. Our Mom remembers her Mom had a washer when she was a little girl that had those wringer rollers. Boy, that must have been a lot of hard work.
